What equipment do I need to use use SpeechYou™?

Most computers made in the last several years are fast enough to smoothly play SpeechYou™ video content. We do require Flash player 9, and a modern browser (Firefox, Safari, IE, Opera, etc). Your average residential DSL or Cable connection should be fast enough, but with video: the faster your connection is, the more fluid your record and playback experience will be.

PC REQUIREMENTS
1.4 Ghz or faster processor
Web cam capable of 320x240 resolution
Microphone (or one built into web cam)
High speed internet connection (DSL or Cable)
A current browser version (Firefox or IE)
The latest Adobe® Flash browser plug-in
MAC REQUIREMENTS
Power Mac G3 or better
Web cam capable of 320x240 resolution
Microphone (or one built into web cam)
High speed internet connection (DSL or Cable)
A current browser version (Safari or Mozilla)
The latest Adobe® Flash browser plug-in

How fast of an internet connection should I have?

SpeechYou™ uses streaming video technology and we recommend a connection speed of at least 512kbps download and 256kbps upload. Your average residential DSL or Cable connection should be fast enough. However, the faster your connection is, the more enjoyable your video experience will be.

Do I need the Adobe® Flash Player enabled to use this site?

Yes! SpeechYou™ uses streaming video technology. You will need to have the most current Adobe® Flash Player installed in your browser. Please visit www.adobe.com for more information.

I am having some recording problems with poor quality video.

Our recording system automatically adjusts the video quality to match the capabilities of your Internet connection and computer. If you find that your web cam video is choppy, or of a poorer quality than when you use a desktop application, we suggest you check the upstream (upload) speed of your Internet connection, and turn off any background programs or uploaders that may be hogging your available bandwidth.

What are camera settings?

Camera settings let you select a video camera to use with Adobe® Flash Player. The pop-up menu displays all the cameras that the Flash Player finds on your computer. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) on a Flash Player area. From the context menu, select SETTINGS and then click the CAMERA tab.

What happens if I do nothing with the camera settings?

Adobe ® Flash Player automatically detects any video cameras on your computer and displays the name of the default camera it will use. If you do not select another camera from the pop-up menu, Flash Player uses the default camera. To see a live display of the image being detected by the default camera, click the Video Preview area.

What if the Flash Player doesn't find a camera?

If the Adobe® Flash Player can't locate a camera on your computer, the player displays the warning "No camera found." Read the documentation for your computer and your camera to make sure your camera is installed correctly. If you have a Mac, it may have selected the wrong camera by default. If you are finding that your iSight isn't working with Flash, right-click (or Control-click) on any Flash movie and choose "Settings...", then click on the camera icon. Choose "IIDC Fire Wire Video" from the menu.

My Mac camera selected DV Video.

The default setting on some Mac computers has the web cam incorrectly set as the "DV Video". You will need to choose the correct setting, most likely "USB Video". Please refer to your web cam documentation and verify it works in other programs.

I keep getting a "Warning" about Camera and Microphone Access.

When you record a video, the Adobe® Flash player needs to access your web cam and microphone. Please click "ALLOW" whenever you see this notice.

Do I have to click "ALLOW" every time I use this site?

No. You can use the Privacy Settings panel to allow or deny access to your camera and microphone for all applications from this web site without asking you for permission each time. To display the Privacy Settings panel:

     1. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) the application image while it is running.
     2. From the context menu, select Settings, and then click the Privacy tab.
     3. Check box "ALLOW" and "REMEMBER" and click on CLOSE. Your settings will be saved.

You can also use the Adobe® Flash Player Settings Manager to manage your privacy both globally (for all web sites) and on a site-by-site basis (for web sites you have already visited).

I am still having problems, can I contact you directly?
